Re: A question about birth control pills and PCOSFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netMon, 22 Jul 2002 18:04:27 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Jessica, if you have such bad effects from BCP, you should not be using them. There are other forms of contraception available. Even down to the condom (if your man would agree) or Natural Family Planning combined with temperature (which can work very well to prevent or achieve pregnancy - even in someone with PCOS - if you can learn to be well attuned to your body.) Many of the women here are on glucophage/metformin for treatment of PCOS. It is often quite effective. Just do a search through here on metformin and you will have so many hits you will be reading for months. As for having kids straight away, that is something that is up to you and your husband. You may or may not have difficulty getting pregnant. My little sister who has very severe PCOS (in terms of symptoms and hormone levels) got pregnant with no problem and is now 6 months. However, it would be recommended that you find an gynecologist, endocrinologist or reproductive endocrinologist who is familiar with PCOS and its treatment, cause it can have implications for getting and maintaining a pregnancy. And, of course, proper treatment is important for health and well-being. Best wishes Sally
