Re: PCOS & MeridiaFrom: Pat (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 21 Jul 2002 19:47:38 -0500 (CDT)
The function of Meridia is very different than Metformin. For women with IR Metformin improves the cells ability to receive insulin. As high insulin is what is contributing to the increased weight and PCOS, it has a different effect. Meridia has to do more with the serotonin. Meridia might help someone who is heavy, w/o PCOS, but I wonder about its effectiveness with PCOS and IR. Also, if it increased Blood Pressure and causes headaches, it most likely would be contraindicatd in women with PCOS/IR. Also, it is a 'controlled substance', so that means it needs to be very carefully watched, and might have addiction potential. Here are some comments about Meridia: <<<IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR MERIDIA Because MERIDIA inhibits serotonin reuptake, in general, it should not be administered with other serotonergic agents. However, if such a combination is clinically indicated, appropriate observation of the patient is warranted. MERIDIA is a controlled substance in Schedule IV. MERIDIA is contraindicated in patients receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), who have anorexia nervosa, who have hypersensitivity to sibutramine or any of the inactive ingredients of MERIDIA, and those taking other centrally acting appetite-suppressant drugs. MERIDIA substantially increases blood pressure in some patients. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is required when prescribing MERIDIA.>>
