It is helpful to have a Thyroid screen, as if your levels are too high or too low, this can affect metabolism. A Fasting Blood sugar isn't as helpful as a FBS and 2 hour, for getting a clear picture of what the status of your blood sugar is. Also, a fasting cholesterol panel is very helpful, looking at cholesterol, triglycertides, HDL and LDL. Also, if you are on a the birth control pill, this will affect both your labwork for PCOS, and the cysts for PCOS...as the pill suppresses these things. I would look at what things were like before you started on the pill....irregular cycles, more dramatic PCOS symptoms. What is being recommneded is appropriate, especially when you look at the long term consequences of untreated PCOS (diabetes, syndrome x and endometrial ca). Origianlly these things weren't identified as being linked to PCOS, now they are. So, medication will help prevent or delay the progression. Once diagnosed, then you can decide on best management. If you have PCOS/diabetes and/or syndrome x, or had gestational diabetes in pregnancy, you can pretty well assume you have some degree of IR, and proceed. The main goal of treatment is to improve your body's cells sensitivity to insulin. Each of these lab tests show different things, and will help you decide where on the continuum you are. Dysmetabolic Syndrome [http://www.aace.com/members/socio/syndromex.php] is a real condition, and needs to be indentified and managed appropriatly.
