Unfortunatly it is difficult to test for IR, as technically no test has been standardized and recommended as being directly for IR. Many recommend a FBS and 2 hour, to see what the blood sugar is following a meal. Others go by a complete cholesterol, which will show Syndrome X, another associated condition. It is probably better to assume you are IR if you have PCOS and/or Syndrome X and/or Diabetes, as IR is a very subtle condition, leading up to these other condititions. While there are folks who might not have insulin resistant cells, if there is excessive insulin in your system, or if your cells resist insulin, eventually you will have problems. The thing about the BCP is is will cloud the diagnosis of IR and any other testing for PCOS. Taking synthetic hormones will stop your normal cycling, and crate an artificial one. I would think it would be most wise to establish a correct diagnosis first, before going ahead with treatment.

The 'gold standard' for IR is the Euglycemic insulin clamp. Others suggest drawing a FBS and 2 hour glucose and insulin, to see what those are.

If you are being encouraged to take an insulin sensitizer such as Metformin, I suspect your provider feels you have some degree of Insulin Resistance, as the purpose of this drug is to make your cells more sensitive to insulin. Metformin can work well for folks with PCOS, and also those who are either a Type II diabetec, or heading in that direction (with elevated FBS and 2 hour, but not yet diagnosed as diabetic.
