Re: To Lauren: Losign weight with Metformin and diet and exercise....anyone do this? From: janet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 12 Jul 2002 12:51:39 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, Lauren: Yes, I think it is much more possible for you to lose weight if you cut back on your carbs. Here's why I say this: Although I am not yet on Met and don't know if it will help with weight loss, I was on Weight Watchers. Although I did lose some weight on WW, I didn't lose much. Then I decided to cut my carbs significantly and focus on getting more protein, exercise and lower carb fruits and veggies. I stopped eating highly processed foods and when I did eat bread, I made sure it was low fiber. But basically I eliminated most carbs, except for what I felt I needed for good health. Not only have i lost weight doing this (but I expect better results on Met) but my body shape changed, leading me to believe that PCOSers tend to hold their weight from carbs in their bellies, abdomens, etc. I think reducing carbs helps with the way your fat is distributed and also helps to normalize the hormonal imbalances of PCOS. DON"T GET ME WRONG - I am NOT saying that everyone can control or even reduce the symptoms of PCOS with diet and exercise and carb restriction alone but I do think that carb restriction is a necessity for many of us, including me. My husband has even commented on the changes so far - no acne, less belly fat, etc. > >Hi all. I wanted to jump in on this one. I have not posted in about 3 >months. >I was diagnosed with PCOS in Feb. The main thing was the Lipid panel. >High tris and all that. I also have high testosterone. I also have >some facial hard, arm hair and a little chest hair ( YUK)!! I have laser >treatment every six weeks so this is not an issue. The BIG issue for me >is being overweight. I was working out 3-4 times a week and eating low >fat ( WRONG thing for people with PCOS). So... after realizing I have >PCOS, I thought it would be easier for me to lose weight being on Met >and working out. > >I was in China for 2 weeks right after I was diagnosed and frankly, all >I ate was carbs. I came back and really didn't cut back on carbs like I >should have. I also took 3 months off work to be with my new baby! >So... What kinds of fruits can we eat? > >I know I am babbling but I have gotten SO MANY PIECES OF MIXED info from >different books ( IR Diet - tells you to eat no more than 30 carbs in a >sitting and balance them with protein) , Atkins ( Hardly any carbs), The >Zone ( another balancing act) > >I feel overwhelmed!!! > >-- >Lauren >
