Re: Glucophage Dosing WAS: AgitatedFrom: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 5 Jul 2002 12:01:16 -0500 (CDT)
Just jumping in and adding two cents - per usual!! (OK totally OT, when did they take the "cents" sign off of keyboards? What did they add in its place? I know it was a while ago, but they all had them when I was a kid...) ANYWAY, yes, as tera said I'm on a really high dose. I currently take 3g of glucophage - not generic met, which made me very very sick - a day. I get my liver checked every few months just in case. So far, so good! My endo claims that just because a drug company has a highest recommended dose doesn't mean you can't go over it if your doctor thinks it's safe and useful for you. He also used the "This would be a perfectly normal dose in Europe" argument. I don't know that that's true, but I did need a higher dose so I didn't argue too much. BMS, the company that makes Glucophage, recommends that you start off taking it VERY slowly, and work up until you either a) hit a dose that works to control your symtpoms, or b) reach 2550mg/day. So no specific prescribed amount. I will say that in almost all of the medical studies I've seen on using Glucophage to treat PCOS, the dose they used for the studies was 1500mg. This SEEMS to be a pretty standard dose, but your body might need more or less. I have been told by a couple of endos that standard dosing for diabetics is 1000mg and for PCOS is 1500mg. Again, that's just a general guideline. If you're going up to 2550mg, remember to do so very very slowly, like 1/2 or 1/4 of a pill at a time, especially if they're 850mg pills. Do it over several weeks so your body can adjust. And, if you find that your PCOS symptoms seem to start being well controlled at, say, 1500mg or so, you can always stop there.
