Re: Glucometer (to Sonnet)From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 29 Jun 2002 15:12:56 -0500 (CDT)
Hi lisa, it's not so bad! A glucometer is one of those little machines you use to test your blood sugar. Most of them require you to give your fingertip a tiny prick with a lancet (which doesn't hurt, it feels more like a tap) and then somehow get the blood onto a test strip. Different models vary as to how they do this. Right now, I am using a OneTouch Ultra that I *LOVE.* I doesn't mind the finger pricks. This machine is very very accurate, very small and easy to carry in a purse if need be, and very very fast. 15 seconds! It has neat little capillary test strips too, so when you get a tiny blood sample (the size of the head of a pin or a period at the end of a sentence) you ust touch the end of the strip to it and it automatically tests it, there's no putting a full drop of blood on a strip like glucometers used to be. I used to have one of the new ones they make that you can test on your arm instead of pricking your finger. But I found that it hurt MORE on my arm, was very fussy and had lots more steps, and wasn't as accurate. You can buy glucometers at your pharmacy for about $50 - $100 (depends on the type) Or, if your doctor thinks it's a good idea, insurance will usually pay for them.
