Re: METFORMIN? QUESTIONS DOC DIDNT TELLFrom: cw (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 29 Jun 2002 09:16:04 -0500 (CDT)
Start your Met right away by taking only 1 pill at dinner time. See how you feel for a couple days. If it bothers you, cut it in half for a week or two. Then go back to the one pill. If it doesn't bother you and you feel ok, continue the one pill at dinner and a week or two later, take a 2nd pill at breakfast the following morning. Wait another week or two, and then add your 3rd pill at lunch. Met can have some side effects such as stomach cramps and diarreah, dizziness and sleepiness, but if you build up slowly, you can avoid or lessen these problems. Met is a medication that helps control the glucose/insulin balance in your body. Your doctor gave it to you because you probably have insulin resistance which plays a big role in many women with PCOS. High protein low carb diets work well with people that have insulin resistance. Have some protein with every meal, and eat only fresh or whole unrefined carbs. Healthy fats such as canola oil, nuts, unrefined peanut butter, and the fats from salmon and tuna are very good and should be included in small quantities in your diet over the course of a week.
