I will add to what Donna said.

Yes, start the met straight away and do start slowly. Some people don't have gastro symptoms some have very severe. You can build up as slowly as you need to (even if that means only half or even 1/4 tablet a day initially). Gastro symptoms (if you have them) normally settle down as your body gets used to the met.

Diet - steer clear of / reduce refined carbohydrates (white bread, white pasta, white rice, fruit juice, soft drinks, candies, anything sugary) - try to eat your carbs (fruits, veges, grains) in their least processed form possible. Some people find they need to be strict with the diet, others find thay don't have to wrroy so much. However, if you need to lose weight, reducing the carbs will help. When you do eat carbs make sure you eat them with some protein and healthy fats. It is all about balance.
