Re: Just how many PCOSer's are overweight?From: cupnjava (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 28 Jun 2002 23:07:10 -0500 (CDT)
Trista, I am 5'3 and currently 253 lbs; 27 and the proud mother of two cats and a golden child step-daughter (15). I found out two weeks ago I have PCO. My right ovary is totally destroyed (I guess I waited too long to see the doc huh?). I have to go in for surgery at the end of July. As it is now my right ovary has to be removed, my left one needs to be treated and my uterus will be "inspected". My Dr. told me that once I am opened both ovaries may need to be removed (if the left one is worse that the ultasound shows etc etc) and that the uterus may need to be removed. I'm a bit nervous about the surgery....alas that is another forum. I was on depo provera for about 5 years and the loss of labido, and depression became too much and I got off. I had not so slowly gained almost 100 lbs while on it. 30 of which between the first and second shot. Weight has always been an issue for me. After depo my periods were very irregular...sometimes I'd skip months at a time. Husband has had a vascetomy and the faithful wife is worried about how a freak preganacy would look to the others in the family. I wasn't pregnant -- whew....thank goodness. I was so concerned that no one would believe me that I DIDN'T cheat. Anyways, I thought my system hadn't worked out the depo and I figured my periods would hook-up with the moon and I'd get regular again. Of course it had been two years since my last depo shot --can I get a clue stick here?? I went from no period to "I think I'm having more days on than off". I got a calendar and when it hit me I had been passing clots for MONTHS (here comes getting hit with the clue-club) and I was getting really really tired, I went to the dr. My primary care took blood and did a hormone level check. Before the results were back the ultrasound was scheduled. Before my primary care called me with the results they had scheduled me to see an OB/GYN who is also a surgeon (is that typical?). Before I left his office my surgery was set. I know some people get treated with meds or lacorcopic surgery. My dr. shook his head and said "You're too far along for that". I have to admit I've felt a "lumpish thing" on the inside of my hipbones , but I figured I still wasn't use to the weight. My dr. mentioned my weight before I could even ask him about it. After discussing surgery he said "And once your hormones get back to normal you should be able to control your weight better. I treated a nurse lacorscopically and she lost 20 lbs within two weeks after the surgery." I'm too far gone for lacro.....I need full blown "days in the hospital" surgery. My right ovary is about the size of an orange. As far as trying to loose weight...well......since I started depo nothing seemed to work (even after depo--frutless efforts). Water Areboics 3 times a week, Yoga 3 times a week and careful eating for 3 months..I gained and was so frustrated I gave up. I went on an Anthropolgical trip to a country with a 70% malnutrition rate and I actually gained weight while I there...hiking, walking to remote villages and 70% malnutrtion and I GAINED weight. I threw my hands up. Finally getting the diagniosis gave me wind again and I was gonna start working out before the surgery--maybe it will help the recovery. I FINALLY stopped bleeding (for just over a week) and I went to the gym. Back in the pool and back at the weight machines. It felt great. The next day the flood gates opend....sigh. Passing clots again. I guess I shouldn't do that huh? So....I'm gonna have to hang up the gym clothes until I have recovered from the surgery. Then maybe I get a hold of this. The oddest part is even with almost 100 lbs weight gain, I've only gone up 2 sizes....go figure. I hope everyone gets the treatment they need, Huggles, Cupnjava
