Neurontin does not repair the damage, it relieves the pain. (At least that's my understanding.) Neuropathy is usually caused by diabetes, but on occassion can be caused by other things, such as excessive alcohol consumption. So, controlling one's blood sugars is the best way to prevent worsening of the neuropathy. It is caused by the small vessel disease that comes with diabetes, so that the vessels supplying the nerves plug up and the nerves starve. The increased sugar concentration in the blood also changes the osmotic balance, and can damage the nerves.
