Re: Southwest Airlines, another opinion

I agree with you. I think it is just a question of practicality.

I was once flew with on an international flight with an old woman next to me who was travelling with a child. Well the child did not have her own seat( supposedly under 2)- and the trip was MISERABLE for me. The poor old lady was trying her best to keep the child on her lap, and would sit 'indian style' in her seat so the child could sleep in her lap. I cannot tell you how ticked I was. I felt so bad for this little old lady who did not speak english and had been put on a plane with a child, BUT I WAS SO UNCOMFORTABLE.

You may ask what the heck this has to do with this topic. Well the point is that when YOU cannot be comfortable in your own seat because someone else is encroaching on your space that is not fair!!

I am not the thinnest person in the world- believe me. But let's just stop being emotional and aghast by something that is really very straightforward. I am sure no one on this board would have been happy to be in my seat on the transatlantic flight with granny and the over-gorwn 2-yr old- who should have had a separate seat. In the same way, we should understand that we take up more space than our seat, that we should pay extra for a larger seat in business class, or take the train. But we should not expect our fellow travellers to just bear with it.

I think that this may be a good thing in a way. Maybe SW will lose enough of its business and decide to do a better thing- like put in wider seats. There are certainly things that can be done to accomodate more people, but not everyone is going to fit into even a bigger seat. In the end, someone's feelings are going to be hurt. Remember that not everyone is concerned about the comfort of those around them.

If I have to book a seat with SW I would find out int detail what the size limits are, etc and then choose whether or not to fly with them or with another airline.

Really, what they are syaing is not so horrific. Our society has just become way to PC- let's just face the realities :-)
