hi trista =) first, i wanted to say that studies seem to show that obesity is CAUSED by PCOS not the other way around. that said however, the extra weight doesn't just sit there making us look blooby =) it also effects our hormone levels, so overweight PCOSers tend to have more severe cases, and tend to show overall improvement once some weight is lost. often overweight PCOSers feel guilty and ashamed for several reasons. first our doctors more often than not tell us that if we wouldn't eat so much, we'd lose weight. the fact is, the don't tell us what to eat and what not to, so we turn to that old low-fat/high-carb standard and gain more weight, which in turn makes the docs believe we aren't even making an effort. second, since PCOS is basically an insulin problem (not trying to start the IR debate again, just stating what studies show ladies), we are very sensitive to carbs, and actually have a tendency to binge on them...when our doctors tell us we aren't trying, we think back to that one time where we needed that extra piece of bread or whatever, and we start to believe them...feeling guilty. the fact is, had they told us to avoid or cut back on carbs, we might have made the connection sooner, saving everyone a lot of hassle =) my story in brief (i have told it over and over, some have to be tired of it =) i am 27.i gained weight like crazy my whole life. tried weight watchers, jenny craig, slim fast, OTC drugs, richard simmons, basically every plan you can think of. reached 363 pounds as of jan 1999. had never had a normal period, excess facial hair had to be shaved 2x a day, was type 2 diabetic, high blood pressure, acanthosis nigracans everwhere you can think of, and of course i was totally depressed. began glucophage 1500mg and started The Zone diet plan. i didn't follow it exactly, i just read the book and followed the way they balance the carbs with proteins/fats. i was too heavy to do any real exercise, so i started out doing physical therapy exercises in bed each night. once i got some muscule tone again, i started walking 2-3 minutes a night and worked my way up to 10. over the next 2 years, i came off the diabetic medication, my hair growth slowed dramatically, acanthosis nigracans faded into non-existance in most places, i began weaning off my blood pressure medication, lost 100+ pounds and started normal periods. after 7+ years of marriage and unprotected sex, i became pregnant in november of last year, and my son is due in august =). i currently weigh 274, but i am not allowed to diet because i am pregnant. i have no doubt that i will have a difficult time losing the remaining weight, but i also have no doubt that it will happen. knowing what foods your body reacts to is the key to weight loss in my opinion. you must talior your daily intake to your bodies needs and tell anyone who tells you different to back off. some women must reduce their carbs dramatically (to like 50g a day) others do not. personally, i have about 6 servings of carbs a day (1 serving = 15g) and i do well. i would start out with 2 servings per meal and adjust from there (just my opinion). also eating small meals a day as opposed to 3 large ones can seriously help keep your insulin in balance. i HIGHLY recommend reading the zone for tips on how to adjust your eating. you may not be able to keep to their amounts, but remember you dont want to diet, you want to find something that is easy and comfortable to live with for the rest of your life, because you will have PCOS the rest of your life. the zone was that for me. love, paula
