if you are on glucophage or are thinking about it, READ THIS!!!!!From: Jordana (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 21 Jun 2002 08:51:51 -0500 (CDT)
Hi everyone, This might be a long email, but if you are on glucophage, or are considering starting it, you should definitely read this. I'm writing this on this board mainly b/c as a sufferer of PCOS, I feel an obligation to let all of you know that this medicine DOES WORK. I am almost 22 years old and have never had a period 2 months in a row since I first got my period when i was 13. I was on 2 rounds of Accutane in high school (8 months each, which is an extremely long time). I have been on 5 different types of BC and I've also been on Aldactone. I also go to a cardiologist for high BP (another side effect of the PCOS) and have been on medication for that as well. It was my dermatologist who suggested that I might have PCOS. To make a long story short, during my sophomore year of college I went to see a reproductive endocrinologist, who as far as I'm concerned is practically my personal hero. She started me on new BC pills, ones that had no side effects and were designed specifically for hormone imbalances that result from PCOS. We tried out a few different things, and 6 months after I first saw her she started me on glucophage, even though my fasting blood test did not indicate a need for it. I worked my way up to 2000mg/day (1000 in the morning and 1000 at night). There were a lot of side effects to the medicine, the two biggest being loss of appetite for the first few months and serious gastrointestinal problems (which still bother me today, but not quite as bad). I stuck with the medicine, even through the weeks where I'd have diarrhea every day (sorry if that sounds gross to any of you, but its a fact of life w/ this medicine). She kept me on BC for the first year that I was on the medicine. I went off the BC last summer and have remained off of it. I did not get a period, and every two months I would take Provera for 10 days (progesterone supplements) to bring on a period. I hated taking that-it causes terrible mood swings and side effects. (For those of you that don't know its very unhealthy to go more than 2 months without a period-it can lead to uterine cancer and endometriosis). Then, at the end of February of this year, I got a period on my own. That was a great day :) I thought it was a fluke, until along comes a day in the beginning of April and lo and behold, another period. Then, another at the beginning of May, and another just a week ago. That's 4 periods in a row, for the first and only time in my life. The glucophage DOES WORK. It takes a long time-I knew that going into it, but I never thought this would actually happen. I'm crossing my fingers and knocking on wood that this time next month I'll get a period again. I've actually started to be able to sense the PMS symptoms and I know when I'm about to get it. I joke with my friends and say that I'm probably one of the only women in the world who is excited to get her period! I wanted to write this to tell all of you not to lose hope. I know how hard this can be. I can't even tell you how much time I've spent thinking about what I'd do if I couldn't have kids on my own or how would I ever find a husband who would be ok with that. There is medicine that works, you just have to be patient and tolerant. If you have questions, feel free to post them here or email them to jlj10@duke.edu.
