there is some reason to have the IGTT after a fasting insulin, just to see how the glucose and insulin react to each other, but in my experience it isn't necessary. i always tell people to have the IGTT to begin with, but only because doctors are reluctant to order it after a normal fasting result. i was also placed on medication based on my fasting insulin level (around 50). it was only AFTER i combined the glucophage with diet/exercise though that my numbers began to fall. i was told by my RE at the time that for a woman my age (i was 24 at the time), who is otherwise healthy i should have a fasting insulin level of >6.
