Re: Frusturated at doctors... Nobody seems to listen! From: Deborah (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 20 Jun 2002 07:34:08 -0700
Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="------------FF05FDA35376E10C643D1A4E" You're not alone with this swelling, pain, and nausea, Amy. I've experienced that with every single BCP I've tried. I don't know if it's a side effect of the BCP, but every time I've complained to a doctor, they've just prescribed a new BCP. Just what I want, right? Well, my solution was to stop taking the BCP's all together and hope that this new doctor that I'm going to see next month won't think that I'm a hysterical woman or a hypochondriac. I know the nausea and the pain are real. I guess you've just got to keep shouting until they listen. Perhaps it's our body makeup that causes the BCP's to have such an effect on us. Just my opinion. Hope it helps you to know that you're not the only one experiencing these problems. Deborah I have no idea where else to post this... and I need some help and some advice. I've just started taking control of my PCOS. Fourtunately, I'm lucky and the majority of my symptoms are just hormonal. (The only depressing thing is I have WORSE premenopausal symptoms than my mother, who's 53...Heh.) Soo, I got on the BCP, got on a diet (er, _lifestyle_ change), and I'm in the third week of my first pack. There are still some hormonal issues (argh), but my major concern is actually with swelling and LOTS of pain in my lower abdomen. Right now, I can't even wear the jeans that are the staple of my wardrobe, because the pain is too intense. I've been doiing some research, but I just don't seem to be asking the right questions. Do functional cysts burst and cause swelling in some cases? What else causes symptoms of mild nausea and weakness, with abdominal pain and noticable swelling? Its not listed in the medical literature with the BCP, but has anyone else had this as a side effect of the pills who has been diagnosed with polycystic ovaries? I've felt like I'm up against a brick wall when I am trying to voice my concerns about this. I was told that it was "normal", even though NONE of the women I know have ever had this in the course of a normal menstrual cycle. Even when I tried to express this concern, the nurse stayed firm by what she had been told. I'm going to another doctor (My GP isn't around, argh) ASAP for a second opinion, but I'm very afraid of getting the same "Don't worry about it sweetheart, its all in your head" treatment. So, how do y'all deal with the "hysterical woman" or "Hypocondriac" assumption by some doctors? How do you keep up the courage and the determination to keep trucking along until someone does listen? I'll admit, I'm pretty disheartened. I'm worried about the pain and the causes, but I'm tired of being told to wait... because that's what I'm doing, and it isn't getting better after nearly a week. Well, thanks for listening... reading?
