Re: Starting glucophage with normal fasting insulinFrom: cw (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 17 Jun 2002 20:55:20 -0500 (CDT)
My fasting insulin levels were 6, 8, and 2. IR doesn't show up, but the IR effected me 1-3 hours after meals, making me feel like a yoyo, but by the time morning came after fasting all night, my insulin levels lowered and leveled off. Is this the same way you feel? My doctor was willing to let me try glucophage for this reason. Wow! Did I feel better!!! It sounds like your current doctor is giving you some wise advice, and doctors like this are hard to find. I say "go for it" while you have the chance. Give it a try at least. Start small though, like only 1/2 a pill at dinner first. You may be very borderline and any more than that at first might cause you side effects. As far as trying Atkins diet again. Well, I've tried it myself many years ago, as well as studying nutrition on my own and through seminars, and I have a personal opinion about this diet that many don't agree with. But I will tell you what I think and you can make your own decision. This way of eating, on a long term basis, is not very healthy. It's too unbalanced. It can cause ammonia build up in the kidneys, and the brain requires glucose for top performance. Additionally, carbs, like fruits, veges, and whole grains, contain not only vitamins and minerals and fiber necessary for health, but also many different enzymes and anti-oxidants that cannot be found in supplements. On the other hand, taking glucophage gives one the opportunity to be able to eat more balanced because it helps stabalize the glucose/insulin levels in the body. Everyone is different in how many carbs they can eat, and it takes some experimenting, but in my opinion, they should not be given up completely. Try reading the book "Sugar Busters" or the "Insulin Resistance Diet" to help guide you a little better. In summary, my advice is for you to try the glucophage in very small bits first, and balance your meals with protein and carbs together until you find a balance that makes you feel good. It takes time, but it's soooo worth it. Much luck to you. I've been there, and know how it feels!
