Re: Getting doctors to give IGTT- to JWJFrom: cw (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 13 Jun 2002 13:59:14 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Jessica, I will be more than happy to answer your questions.
>Would you mind telling me what you have found your optimal dosage of 250 mg. at breakfast and 250 mg. at dinner. I take one 500 mg. tablet, cut it in half, and split it between the 2 meals. (It's a really low dose, but that is all I seem to need. At first I took 500 mg. at once at dinner and it was way too much, made me dizzy and sleepy.) You can buy a pill cutter for about $5 at Walgreens, or whatever pharmacy store you have in your area.
>Also, what was the other type of test you had where the IR showed up. The fasting glucose/insulin test was not showing anything for me. So then my doctor and I talked about getting the IGTT. But we decided to try something else first because I was a bit afraid to get the IGTT thinking I would probably get too sick during the test. 3-5 hrs. of pure sugar on an empty stomach didn't appeal to me much. LOL My doctor tested my glucose and insulin about 2 hrs. after I ate a very high carb snack early in the morning while I was in the midst of having one my "attacks" (shaking, sweating, and feeling like I'm going to pass out). My glucose came out 71 which is only 1 point over LOW, and my insulin came out 20. That was enough to convince my doctor to at least let me try the glucophage. Because it helped me feel so much better, she said I should stay on it and just experiment with the dosage that was best for me.
>What was it that clued them in on that test to the fact you actually The fact that my glucose seemed to be dropping after eating sugar, along with my insulin rising, gave her the idea that I was probably IR.
>Thanks for your help. It is so nice to hear from someone else with my Anytime. I hope you are able to find what you need to feel better.
