PCOS and endometriosis

Hi,

I run a list on http://www.egroups.com (or Yahoo groups now) for women with PCOS and endometriosis called pcoendo. There's only 46 ladies on there. Unsure how many there are on the list here, but on the PCOSA PCOS main list there's several thousand from what's been reported. I (or anyone else) can always advertise the pco/endo group or ask who has both conditions on the PCOS and endometriosis groups/lists/newsgroups I'm on.

I've never heard of a proven connection between the two either. That being said, on the Endometriosis Research Center's news and research page, EmerGen said they established Endometriosis as a Genetic Disorder or found strong evidence confirming Endometriosis is an inherited disorder. Whether or not that is on the same level as a genetic link for PCOS though, who knows? We don't know the exact causes for both diseases. I remember discussion a long time ago about both PCO and endometriosis being related on the PCOSA's main list. I think the only one who thought so someone from a Houston group. I'm unable to find anything about it now. My personal beliefs follow: if the two were related, then what would treat one problem would treat the other. As successful as insulin lowering medications and lifestyle changes are for PCOS, it doesn't make the endometriosis better. One of the main thrusts of dealing with endometriosis is using drugs to stop periods, to have less of them. I know my endometriosis got worse when I used only Metformin to control the PCOS, due to monthly periods. They were also longer lasting and heavier. (Win some, you lose some.)

Latest stats:

http://www.endocenter.org/endo.html: Endometriosis is a disease which affects over 5 million women and girls worldwide, with millions more worldwide.

http://www.endometriosis.org/: Estimates of the numbers of women who suffer from endometriosis vary wildly. Some put the figure at 15% of women in their reproductive years. 10% is a more common guess. ... Nearly 90 million women world-wide has been proposed as a conservative figure.

http://www.endometriosisassn.org/endo.html: Endometriosis is a painful, chronic disease that affects 5 1/2 million women and girls in the USA and Canada, and millions more worldwide.

In regards to Renee's Medline search, I did one for endometriosis and different forms of PCOS, and got nothing.
