Re: Drinking lots of waterFrom: paula (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 11 Jun 2002 13:13:03 -0500 (CDT)
no, unfortunately not. the reason protein works with carbs is this: carbohydrates are short chain sugars (well, they come in different legnths haha, but compared to proteins, they are short chain) that break down very quickly in the digestive system, causing a surge of glucose and thus a surge of insulin (a BIG surge in women with IR). proteins however are much more complex and take longer to break down. when you eat the two together, the body breaks down the carbs slower because it is also busy with the protein (for lack of a better way of putting things) so you end up with a slower resease of the glucose and thus a lesser reaction from your insulin as well. water is simple 2 hydrogen atoms and an oxygen atom, easy to break down. it can help keep your system functioning wonderfully, can help with weight loss (i am not sure whether it is because it helps fill your tummy so you eat less, or if there is some other cause though) and is generally a wonderful thing to consume mass amounts of, but it won't help slow the absorption of glucose. love, paula
