Re: Meridia or Xenical? Anyone Else?From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 5 Jun 2002 17:06:53 -0500 (CDT)
I *believe* Meridia has also been taken off of US shelves for similar reasons. I don't know for certain, so don't quote me on it, but I believe the reason had to do with several deaths while taking the drug combined with its known side effect of increased blood pressure. (I am 300+ pounds and have perfect blood pressure, I'm not screwing around with mine that way *grin*) Xenical had a hard time getting FDA approval in the first place because (again, I am trying to remember) of an unexpected rise in breast cancer rates in women who took it. It's not a very pleasant drug as far as side effects, which include serious, greasy diarrhea all the time. Especially not good when you're already dealing with Glucophage! Both of these are also drugs that help to control overeating. For many (most?) women with PCOS who fight obesity, the problem isn't overeating, it's insulin problems. So in that respect I would think that the drugs wouldn't be very much use at helping weight loss for us anyway. That being said, maybe the effects of being overweight are severe enough for you that this is a choice you're willing to take! Definitely talk it over with your doctor and see what they have to say about it.
