Re: Is there a cureFrom: paula (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 30 May 2002 17:40:24 -0500 (CDT)
it really depends on your defination of the word cure. PCOS is believed to be caused by a mutation to a gene on chromosome 19, and this gene prompts a problem with insulin metabolism causing a myrid of endocrine problems. if you take the word cure to mean that you will be absoultly "fixed" for life, then there is no cure currently available because there is no way to repair this gene. however, there exist several ways to reduce symtpoms in many women. some have found that simply following a low-carbohydrate diet and exercising regularly has reduced their symtpoms, others need more medical intervention such as insulin sensitizing medications like glucophage, actos, or advandia. there is a coorelation between weight loss and reduction of symptoms, but this isn't true for all women. personally i needed a low-carb diet (i recommend the zone because it is well balanced, but the proportions may need to be adjusted to fit your lifestyle) combined with glucophage. i lost 100+ pounds, saw a reduction in my excess hair growth and acanthosis nigracans, and began having natural period (this took me from jan 99 to jan 2001). i became pregnant in nov of last year and am not expecting my son this august. PCOS can be controlled, it just may not be able to be erased from your body's genome. good luck! love, paula
