Re: Testing for IR (was) Re: anorexic individuals with pcosFrom: Pat (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 29 May 2002 19:22:42 -0500 (CDT)
1. Diabetes is high sugar levels, when the insulin isn't controlling it. 2. High insulin levels are just that...high insulin levels, that can cause lots of damamge long term, and burn out the pancreas long term. High inslulin levels and high sugar levels can co-exist. 3. PCOS also adds high androgen levels. So, one can have PCOS and not diabetes, but it is coming around eventually. So, what can you do ? I feel making healthy choices, avoiding sugar, flour and starchy vegs (sort of a modified low carb, probably a 40-30-30) can't hurt you at all, and will help keep your blood sugars within a normal range. We should all eat to keep our blood sugars within a normal range. I am not diabetic and I do not have PCOS. I am in menopause, and have a very sluggish metobolism, and feel better when I eat less sugar and starchy carbs. I am hypoglycemic, and my HG A 1c is 6. I had a greater than 9 # child, and am overweight. I walk every day, and so far all of my labwork is okay. Oh, and I am 58. But, I do not want to develop diabetes, but I am eating like someone who might have diabetes...the way Dr. BErnstein, and The Zone folks recommend. I do not want damage to my pancreas or my gallbladder or my eyes, and am doing my darndest to prevent this progression. I really do not want any insulin senstitizing drugs or any drugs for that matter. So, there is lots you can do, but it is hard work. I agree with the others...providers won't test for IR unless there is a valid reason, such as obesity, or signs of diabetes or PCOS. YOU can always ask for a Fastinb BS and 2 hour, and see what that is. If that is normal, you are doing okay. Just ask for that every three years or so. It is not clear what test is best for the diagnosis of IR. But a FBS and 2 hour that is higher than 'normal' and not diabites is suggestive of IR (because the sugar levels are higher than average, and the body is not taking care of the sugar well). Blood sugar is not normal, which would strongly suggest IR ! Clear as mud, I know....Pat S
