Can PCOS just spontaneously vanish? Does anyone know? Please help! From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 25 May 2002 23:15:41 -0500 (CDT)
I was diagnosed with PCOS about 4 years ago after years of irregular periods. Menstrual irregularity was my only symptom of PCOS - PCOS was confirmed by a high FSH-LH ratio (I think it was 4-1) & slightly elevated androgens. They also did an ultrasound which showed multiple cysts on my ovaries, though I don't believe it had that "string of pearls" look that you hear about. The irregular periods seemed to be more irregular (further apart) when I was under intense job stress. In May 1999 I quit a very stressful job and took some time off work, began eating and exercising more regularly. Within three months, I became unexpectedly pregnant after my periods started coming about 5-6 weeks apart. I couldn't believe it! Now, 2 years after the birth of my daughter, the dr decided to check my hormones again and says that my LH-FSH is now normal (1-1), and he says that I no longer have PCOS which I believe he says he has never seen happen before. (He is a regular OB-GYN - not a RE) The doctor is certain that I did have PCOS, but he thinks my body is regulating itself and that I am essentially "cured" of PCOS. As for my periods, they are still somewhat irregular, but I am still nursing my 2 year old twice a day. Has this happened to anyone else? I have heard both that PCOS symptoms can get better and that they can get worse after pregnancy, but I haven't heard that PCOS can just go away like this. Also, the IR test showed a level of 17 (he said anything above 4 is normal), and the fasting glucose was normal, lipids normal, cholesterol normal (142). Is there anything else the dr should check just to make sure it is really gone?
