Re: Adrenal Hump/Dowagers Hump: look up Cushings syndrome eomFrom: Renee (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 25 May 2002 20:29:05 -0700
My understanding is that a dowagers hump is due to osteoporosis. Think about the older women who are hunched over at the top of their back. The vertebrae (spine bones) have developed compression fractures, and have collapsed on the front side, resulting in the curve, and the hump. There is another hump that is caused by an endocrine disorder ( I think it is Cushings), but that is completely different in cause, and composition. It is from tissue deposition (I think fat, if I recall correctly). They look very different. The Dowagers hump results in the woman having to crane her neck up to keep from looking at the ground. With the other one, you stand straight, but have that hump on your upper back. Renee
