Re: an increase in dosage of spiroFrom: jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 23 May 2002 11:09:26 -0500 (CDT)
Spiro can cause irregular bleeding especially at higher doses. I took it when I was younger and didn't have a prob with bleeding - I was probably on 50 or 100mg a day. I took it again when I was 23 and boy howdy did I bleed. My doc put me on 100mg, 2times a day. I started taking it in late september. I remeber the package insert said that if your periods become irregular, let your doctor know as this is a side effect of the medication. i thought, how would i KNOW? heh. so i took it. at the beginning of october, i started bleeding. since i had had a period on Sept. 1 (first since april), i thought WOW i'm suddenly becoming normal! after a week and a half of heavy bleeding, i thought, this doesn't feel so normal. at two weeks, i KNEW this wasn't normal. at 2 and a half weeks, i quit the spiro. about a week later, the bleeding finally stopped. some women have frequent bleeding on spiro... some have constant bleeding on spiro... some say this can be dealt with by reducing the dosage... some say it will go away with time... but many women have to take BCPs while on spiro to counteract this effect. i personally cannot handle BCPs (side effects range from migraines to suicidal depression) so i don't take spiro any more. it seems to take the higher dosage to deal with excess hair... lower dose did nothing for me. i saw hair imporvement in the short while (~ 1 month) i was on 200mg/day... but i was losing too much blood to justify the results. :-) - jodi
