If I were you, I'd insist on testing. I'd go off the meds and get tested and then go back on. How can you find the optimal dose, or measure improvements without testing? It sounds like you do have it, but testing is a good thing to do. BTW- what doctors consider "normal" thyroid is often wrong, normal is a TSH of between 1-2. Also, you might need additional treatment besides the glucophage as some women at this forum do.
