Re: Strange blood test resultsFrom: Anne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 16 May 2002 08:40:03 -0500 (CDT)
I was just watching a program on TV last night about diet on the Wisdom channel (I have dishnetwork). It covered a lot of diets including the Ornish diet which is limited to something like 10% fat and is mostly vegetables, whole grains and fruits. The Ornish diet is one to reverse heart disease so it's very strict. But in the context of cholesterol, he said that people are told to follow a diet of 30% fat and when that fails to bring cholestrol down they are given a pill, he said the other option is to reduce fat intake to 10% and not take the pill and that he thought this option should be offered to people. I don't know much about these cholestorol lowering drugs, but it seems that a change in diet offers less risk and might be worth considering for a short trial period. High fiber is good in many ways, and Jane Brody of the NY Times had a great article on the benefits of a plant based diet: http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/14/health/14BROD.html Good luck. I'm sure the increase in glucophage will help a great deal, give it time. If you exercise 5 times a week you should see an improvement in your HDL cholesterol. Also, cutting down on fat and increasing fiber will help your HDL will go up. You can search at http://www.google.com to find many articles on cholesterol and HDL levels, etc. Anne
