Re: another low carb questionFrom: Pat (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 9 May 2002 15:37:11 -0500 (CDT)
There has been a lot of criticism of low carb eating. Mostly this has come from those who support the USDA WOE, which is not valid for many. It was not well researched, there are lots of problems with it, and it doesn't address the needs of women and women getting older, and folks with IR. The research I have read suggests 50 G of carbs is essential for good nutrition, and many sources seem to support between 50 and 100 G of carbs as being a good balance. The USDA food pyramid is probably 300 + G of carb ! High fiber, low glycemic carbs seem to be quite good for us, with lots of nutrients. It is the sugar, starchy carbs, breads, cereals, pastas, sugars and white flour that seem to not be good for us. Many of the 'low fat' foods are high in carbs, and synthtics. I'd rather eat less of the pure food than eat these addatives and extra carbs. So, I choose my favorite Best Foods Mayo over anything synthetic or reduced fat, butter an olive oil over anything synthetic, and get my fat from healthy nuts and seeds. I am trying to cut down on beef, and eat mostly fish, chicken and fruits and vegetables. Always include enough protein to meet my needs, and never feel hungry. No cravings. And, I am very healthy, and feel I am eating as healthy as I can. Rarely eat pasta, potatoes, bread and limit myself to one starchy vegetable/day. And, I don't really miss it, but do allow these things once in awhile, so I'm not falling into the deprevation cycle.
