Re: another low carb questionFrom: Anne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 9 May 2002 09:05:10 -0500 (CDT)
As suggested you can do low carb with lean meats. Or, you can try a balanced approach like the zone diet or the insulin resistance diet. There is a good article on PCOS and diet here: http://www.obgyn.net/displayarticle.asp?page=/pcos/articles/pcos_and_diet_mckittrick I have read that in addition to problems with high fat, high protein diets can put more stress on the kidneys and since kidney disease is often tied to diabetes (and with IR we've got "pre-diabetes") I wonder if it isn't better to reduce protein consumption? I've read one doctor's book that recommends a high fiber, low fat, lower protein diet. It's basically what I've been following. He wrote that he has been able to get his diabetic patients off insulin by having them follow a high fiber vegetarian diet that is low fat and lower in protein. But there is so much diet information out there it's really hard to know how to eat or make a recommendation to someone about what they should do. Ultimately you've got to find what works best for you. While for some high protein/low carb works great, it made me sick even though I stuck to lean meats. I have pretty much had all of the diseases my diabetic father has had, he has kidney problems so that combined with how I felt on a high protein/low carb diet I decided to go with high fiber/vegetarian diet. I find it easier than trying to balance my meals and I feel better on it. But a balanced approach seems like the way to go for most people. Just cut out all sugar and all simple carbs. If you are interested in losing weight, don't forget to exercise - doing both strength training and cardio along with diet will produce sustainable weight reduction according to most studies I've read.
