Re: Loestrin and my fear of medicationsFrom: Sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 24 Apr 2002 03:23:41 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Lynette, Of course it is not good to take meds if you don't need to, but sometimes they can really help. Some people are really against bcp - and probably should be extra cautious if you are diabetic. However decision to take bcp is between you and your doctor - assuming you are fully aware of indications and contraindications. However, met does sound really strongly indicated seeing that you have diabetes and PCOS....and really should be given a very serious try. With regards to the met, all I can recommend is to start very slowly at a very low dose (even 1/4 tab at your biggest meal as a start, then 1/4 tab at your two biggest meals, then 1/2 tab at your biggest meal, etc - whatever you find you can tolerate) and build up very slowly as well taking as long as you need. If you still have problems you might ask your dr. to have you try the extended release type of met which may be better. Also, you might want to carefully monitor blood sugar etc in response to the met and make sure you don't take more than you need to to get an optimal therapeutic effect (ie. if 500 mg twice a day works fine, no need to go up to the max dose which is double that). Of course careful attention to diet and exercise will also help minimise your requirmeent for drugs. Best wishes
-- Sally
