Re: What Happens Next??From: Sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 22 Apr 2002 19:28:47 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Jess, actually, you can't treat the high glucose without treating the PCOS. Because it is the insulin and glucose problems that apparently cause the PCOS. Yes, metformin is probably the best starting approach and probably you should insist that you get to try it. Metformin is used to treat type 2 diabetes. With very high glucose, you would possibly be considered diabetic anyway. Metformin can treat the pcos and the high glucose. It will probably be a long term treatment. There are other treatments available to help with the hair, etc. but these are contraindicated if you are trying to conceive (so only until then). Some people find atkins too strict - though it can be better once you get off the induction phase. Instead, try a more moderate appraoch like the Zone which focuses on a balance approach to protein, carbs and fats, while still cutting out all refined carbs. Exercise, to whatever extent you can, will also be critical in maintaining this. Best Wishes Sally
