10 years too lateFrom: Kristin (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 21 Apr 2002 22:52:21 -0500 (CDT)
I found this site tonight and am posting for the first time. I am so frustrated right now! My mother was diagnosed with PCOS in the 70's, long before they really knew anything about it, but, by some miracle, got pregnant with me right after coming off of the pill (in whatever form the pill took 30 years ago--it was certianly a stronger dose than what I was on in the 90's). She and my father later divorced, so since she wasn't having sex and/or trying to get pregnant, it never occured to her that she might have fertility problems. She didn't get her period until she was 17(!!), so when mine hadn't come by the end of my 16th year, I was upset but not panicked (just a "late bloomer" like Mom, you know). I was still seeing a pediatrician at this time, and rather than sending me to an OBGYN, he tried proestrogen to induce my period. It worked -- and since I was young and foolish and wanted to have sex far earlier than I should have, I immediately went on the pill. Needless to say, that fixed my period problem. I got it nice and regularily, every 28 days, and it never occured to me that anything could be wrong. This initial visit was in 1991. Now, more than ten years later, married, and ready to think about having children, I discovered that I, too, most likely have PCOS. They are doing more tests to confirm, but that's the initial diagnosis. I only went off the pill this January, and I haven't had a period since. I don't have facial hair problems though my actual hair has always been very fine, and I have a lean body...except for my waist, which has always been out of proportion to my small frame. I also have high cholestrol and suffered through anxiety-based depression over the past few years. I am frustrated that I am only finding this out now, and I don't really know why I'm posting except to reach out for advice. I have been reading a lot, though I feel like I am hearing some things that contradict each other, but what worries me the most is finding a really good doctor. Is OBGYN better than endocrinologist? Or should I seek out a fertility clinic? Is anyone familair with the doctors in southeastern Connecticut, where I live? I would appreciate any feedback you can give me. Thank you.
