I have twice in the past 6 months, once when doing the general workup for this and then again just a couple of weeks ago, this last one was because they had tried me on 2 rounds of progesterone and both failed so one of these test were order before we proceeded with anymore treatments. It is tested because too much prolactin can cause you to miss periods and not be able to get pregnant, the body produces it naturally during breastfeeding and is where the tale came from that you can't get pregnant while breastfeeding. If something goes haywire and you end up with high prolactin levels it gives them a clue to what is going on which is why they test the level.
