New Information I just learn--Very interestingFrom: Nicole (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 18 Apr 2002 14:22:12 -0500 (CDT)
I was diagnosed one month ago with pcos. This is after having one child naturally at 26 and then trying for 3 years for another with no luck then seen a reproductive endocronologist for 3 years with no luck. I went through 2 IUI's, 2 IVF's and one donor IVF. Not once during the entire time did my doctor tell me that I had pcos. I want my money back!!!!!!!!!!!!! I recently read an article in Woman's Day, took it to a new OBGYN and had the testing that confirmed my self diagnosis. Anyway, this new OB is so great. When I went in I sat her down, and ran the show, I expained my experiences and told her that if she was not willing to take the time to listen, follow my thoughts, and let me guide her in my treatment then I would pay her for the consult and continue to look for an OB that suited my needs. She was wonderful, she sat for one hour while I explained my entire history. I want to say that all women need to take charge of their bodies even and especially in the presents of Dr's. They know some science not all and even less about your body. If they can not thing outside the box or are intimidated by your knowledge find a new doctor. I wasted years. Anyway, this Dr. is so good that she recently got back from a conference and found out some interesting information about how Metforin works and called me just to let me know about it. I had been concerned because I had hear that you generally lose weight on it and I had not done so yet even though I am an aerobic Instructor who teachs 6 one hour classes a week. She told me that metforin works on the fat areas to allow by using insulin to use it. Initially the metforin causes the fat areas around the middle to reduce but it does not come off the body but redistributes in the arms, leg, thighs, ect. So it is not uncommon to not notice a weight loss righ away. After some time on the medication that redistributed weight then may come off and cause a loss in weight. I am a PhD. not an M.D. so this information is simply being relayed to you as well as I understood it but I though it was very interesting and may help other. The most important message I can think to give after reading many, many posting is that each person must take personal responsibility for their treatment. Remember, Doctor's are not God and they put on their pants one leg at a time just like you and I. Good luck to all and let me know if I can be of further help to anyone. My most kind regards, Nicole
