Re: 4 a doctor or someone who has tried all treatmentsFrom: Belle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 16 Apr 2002 19:40:59 -0500 (CDT)
Glucophage and metformin are the same thing. Metformin is the generic form. They are drugs to help us use our insulin properly. Unless you been a part of a clinical study which was able to check your insulin utilization, you do not know if you have insulin abnormalities or not. The current test that is commonly used is the GTT with insulin levels drawn at the same times. This is not an accurate test to check for insulin problems but it is the best that we have at our disposal. A fasting insulin test is sometimes used to "check our insulin" and this test even more inaccurate than the GTT with insulin levels. This is why some doctors have said that most, if not all, women with PCOS would have insulin resistance if only the tests were sensitive enough. This may also be the reason that Glucophage (metformin) works on women who do not "test" insulin resistance. http://www.pcosupport.org may have a doctor listed for your area, if not, contact them for your local pcosupport group and they should have the name of a doctor in your area. The pill is not a good option for us generally.
