Across the Atlantic & newly diagnosed with PCOFrom: Caroline (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 10 Apr 2002 16:46:14 -0500 (CDT)
Hi. I just discovered this website a couple of days ago, and feel like I have discovered a gold mine! I am 32, diagnosed with PCO in January, which was a complete shock. I have been trying to conceive since Summer 2001(came off the pill that Feb). I am currently awaiting an appointment with a consultant at my local hospital in South West London. All this waiting is SO frustrating! I want to be as prepared as possible when I meet the consultant, so am finding the message board and postings a great source of knowledge and experience, and I thirst for all the knowledge I can get my hands on! Paula, I found your postings on 'Insulin Resistance'-Feb '01 (I need tests to find out if I am IR) and the posting entitled 'Just Curious'last week very informative; you write in such an 'easy-to-read' manner - it's fantastic! The fight to lose weight over the last couple of years has been a hard battle, and one which has regularly provoked much distress and frustration. A strong desire to start a family in the last year has certainly helped me to be more focused on losing weight (and the running & cycling also help), but even the strongest focus can become blurred at times (although I have managed to lose half a stone since Jan...!) I am going for low carb eating as recommended. As I read more and more about peoples' experiences, it feels like 'things' are beginning to fall into place and make sense to me, which is such a relief!(I had a 'normal' and regular cycle until I went on the bcp when I got married in '98. When I came off the pill, my cycle became longer and more and more irregular, and my concerns re. my condition were confirmed in January with my scan.) All the tests and medications that are discussed on the message board sound a bit daunting and complicated to me! I've had blood tests for hormone levels done so far. I am keen to try Metformin, but I shall see what the consultant says. I will however be asking for blood fasting levels and cholesterol( - I believe I'm heading along the right tracks??) (I feel a bit as if I'm dipping my toe in a huge swimming pool, and actually I want to have dived in and happily be into my 2nd trimester all 'aglow'.) I just wanted to feedback the relief I feel on my voyage of discovery on this website!! And I plan plenty more visits to the archives and the internet for information about medication, etc. Having read postings, I also feel much more 'empowered' as I await the first appointment with the consultant. Thank you for that! I welcome any suggestions, recommendations and comments - us girlies unite!!!! Best wishes,
-- Caroline
