Re: PCOS HelpFrom: Pat (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 8 Apr 2002 08:42:35 -0700
Run, don't walk to your gynecologist, and ask for the PCOS screening. Then ask for a referral to an endocrinologist, who can evaluate you and manage you appropriately. Things are changing so quickly, many providers can't keep up. There are medications you can start now to slow the progression of PCOS and weight gain, and help with your other symptoms. For starters, you should not be skipping cycles for that long, and need regulation. It is also very important to get the results of your labs (eg: diabetes) so you can determine for yourself where you are on the continuum. If you have PCOS, then you have IR, which is the pre-diabetic condition. Why does your mom refuse to take you to a gynecologist ? Does she perhaps have PCOS ? Is she afraid you will be sexually active ? You need to be seen, especially if you are skipping periods. There is more to it than just being overweight. PCOS starts sometimes in early adolescence. Here is an article about PCOS and Adolescents: http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/peds/pidl/adolesc/polcysov.htm and another good one: http://bmj.com/cgi/content/full/317/7154/329 http://www.advancedfertility.com/hirsute.htm http://www.aace.com/clin/guidelines/hyperandrogenism2001.pdf I realize these articles are quite technical, but print them out anyway, and read them for whatever you can get from them. Your mom needs to understand there is a significant problem, that needs further evaluation, in my opinion. For starters, you might not be diabetic yet, but probably heading in that direction.
