Re: Am I just imagining it?

Dear Angie,

you are not imagining it. From what you say it sounds that you do have PCOS. It is good to know. Because your weight and your symptoms are not your fault! If your mother will not let you see a gynecologist, would she let you see an endocrinologist? That is perhaps even more important. What about your regular doctor? If you can collate all your research and present it, perhaps he / she will help. Have you shown your mother your research results? Are there any other sympathetic adults you can talk to. You will likely be leaving home in a year or so and will have some more control over these things then. If you post where you live, there may be some women who can direct you towards a very good dr. or a clinic, so that you don't have to go through the difficulty of trying to find a good dr. Does your school have a nurse practitioner or a teacher that you are close to and could help? There may also be some university near by where you live - sometimes they have studies that you may be able to be involved in, thereby getting treatment at the same time.

If you really can't get to see a dr. yet there are still some things you can do to help your situation. Firstly, you need to ensure that you have a low carbohydrate diet. This would mean cutting out all refined sugars and starches. There is plenty of information about lower carb diets on the internet. Some approaches you may wish to review include Atkins (very strict and may be difficult to work with while you still live at home and have to eat what is prepared), The Zone, Sugarbusters (Not so strict and may be more feasible). Changing your diet may help with your symptoms and your weight. Also, you want to get as much aerobic exercise as possible. Even if it is just walking......

Sounds like you are going to need to be proactive and assertive about your health care requirements.

Please post whatever questions you have and the ladies here will advise you as much as they can.

Best wishes,
