just curiousFrom: anne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 3 Apr 2002 08:19:56 -0600 (CST)
Does anyone have any info on the 'causes' i.e primary causes of PCOS? Most people on this site talk about PCOS as if it is entirely caused by insulin resistance/insulin defects. Is this true? What about other genetic defects in how fast one makes androgens? I thought I read about these somewhere. Yes, I know insulin raises the androgen levels , but am I getting my wires crossed? Was this research discredited or what? And what about research on sisters where some sisters of PCOSers have elevated androgen levels but supposedly don't have PCOS? I'm sorry I'm being so vague and not quoting/linking to actual articles here I can't really remember right now where I read these things but they were from 'reliable' sources. Does it depend on the person? or are the androgen defects if they exist not usually a problem except in the presence of high insulin levels? I'm sure its more complicated than that...If we treat the insulin resistance- so hard- but if we treat the insulin resistance are we dealing with all our problems or is the only problem we even have a hope of dealing with right now? (I'm just curious, do I give myself any hope whatsoever?) Secondly what is now known as the source of the insulin problems? There seems to be a lack of d chiro- inositol, similar to in type 2 diabetics (am I getting this right?) which causes some of the problems? Presumably it doesn't cause all of the problems though, right, because I'm guessing with all those diabetics and everything this might be a common deficiency? So what else is going on? Do we know? What's this about us making a different type of insulin or something? this doesn't sound good. Does anyone know where I could read up on this? Do we have a separate type of insulin resistance or something? Are there lots of different types? Do we just know that it all seems to come down to insulin problems but we don't know exactly what?
