Clomid and Glucophage (metformin) have a tremendous success rate for inducing ovulation (91% in one study). If you have PCOS, the metformin may be the thing that is allowing you to lose weight. There is a good PCOS site at http://www.pcosupport.org

You do not have to have cramping in order to ovulate.

Glucophage may in fact be the key to your health, the induction of a pregnancy and to the continuation of a pregnancy during the first trimester. We have a very high miscarriage rate (much higher than the average woman). The lack of progesterone has been blamed for this. Glucophage helps us keep the estrogen down and allows the progesterone to increase as it should.

Insulin resistance - OK, this is going to be very basic because I am feeling lazy tonight. :-) In "normal" people, when food is eaten, the carbs (which are used as energy) goes into our blood stream as blood sugar. The cells cannot use this sugar as it is. Insulin then attaches to the sugar and is the "key" to unlock the cell "door". The sugar/insulin enters the cell and the person has energy.

For us, it seems that our insulin is malformed and also that our cells do not want to let the insulin inside. Without the insulin acting normally, our systems sence too much sugar in our blood and the pancreas puts out more insulin. Eventually, some of the insulin is able to "force" its way into our cells. The blood sugar which is not used correctly turns into fat.

Insulin is a hormone and all of our hormones effect the other hormones. It is thought that the excess insulin is the cause of the increase in the androgens (cause of weight gain in the stomach, acne, hair loss and unwanted hair growth). The androgens in our system also turns to estrogen which prevents the normal rise in progesterone, preventing us from ovulating (causing the LH/FSH - lutenizing hormone/follicle stimulating hormone - to go out of whack and also causing us to develop cysts on our ovaries.)

Glucophage is a drug that helps us use our insulin more efficiently. It helps the insulin enter the cell. There is much more but you can see that the Glucophage can be of great help to someone with PCOS.
