(long)new, sort of: ? re: spironolactone, other meds for hirsutism, complexion problems and dr's in ny (including dermatologists)From: cj (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 2 Apr 2002 14:59:11 -0600 (CST)
hello all i used to partipate on these boards many moons ago...how it's grown! a bit overwhelming...but very encouraging, especially everyone's knowledge and helpful attitude. i've got quite a bit of catching up to do... in that aim...i have a couple of questions. 1)it's well documented that spironolactone can cause 'double periods' or bleeding b/w 'regular' cycles. to avoid this, most dr's prescribe it in conjunction w/ bcp's. several years ago i was taking spiro alone and after some time developed double periods. new doc knew right away what was going on and put me on bcp. i've been taking both for several years and have recently developed double periods again. it's exactly the same as before, when i was not on bcp, so i think this is what's going on. has anyone experienced this? if so, did you just grin and bear it, or opt for other treatment? 2)has anyone had success treating their hair growth w/ other meds, besides spiro? specifics (dosages, how long it took to see results, quality of results, etc) would be very helpful. 3)recently my complexion problems have worsened, all the more since i stopped taking spiro. (just can't deal w/ the double bleeding right now...but if i don't find a good endo soon, i may have to.) i am having a very hard time with this. i will ask for referrals in #4, but here i'm wondering if anyone experiences the same type of break out as i do: i break out where my hair growth is. all around my chin and mouth area. each and every blemish has in it a mean hair that is clogging the pore up. (so naturally much worse after stopping spiro.) my skin is actually dry, and a lot of products (otc) used to treat blemishes are drying...and i just don't know what to do! the blemishes...i can't leave them alone b/c they won't go away while that ingrown hair is clogging it up...so i'm messing up my skin horribly by trying to get at the hairs...any advice? techniques, products, etc? 4)dr's in nyc. i used to see dr. futterweit before he stopped taking my insurance. this was somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 years ago. since then, i've just been getting my prescriptions from my pcp as i'm not ttc and i was satisfied w/ the treatment. now i need to see someone. i wish i could afford to see a dr. outside of my hmo's network, but i can't. i see 2 on my network are prof. members of pcosa. if anyone has experience w/ dr. gage or dr. spandorfer, i'd love some insight. please feel free to e-mail me privately as i'm reluctant to be discussing a person in particular on the boards. also, i think i should see a dermatologist. i never have, as my hair situation - and now this awful acne - is my most shameful/embarassing issue and i just could never deal with the thought of someone inspecting me there! but now i've got to suck it up. does anyone recommend their dermatologist? i'd love to see someone who has experience w/ pcos patients. fwiw, i am 25 years old (originally diagnosed at...18? ages ago!). right now just trying to treat these cosmetic problems...wish i had products or techniques to offer, but i don't think i do. for folks w/ complexion problems, i might suggest st. ives tea tree face wash. non-drying...seems pretty good for the complexion. i'm having a mess of a time w/ moisturizers...the best so far is mac's studio moisture fix. good moistureizer, doesn't seem to make the complexion worse...though sometimes it's hard to tell. thank you so very much for reading this and for any replies. again, please feel free to e-mail privately if you are discussing dr's beyond just an identification for referral purposes, or, even if you simply feel more comfortable communicating via e-mail. blessings, cj
