Re: hysterectomy & PCOSFrom: Maggie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 28 Mar 2002 10:20:05 -0600 (CST)
Hi.. I'm answering this a little late, but wanted to say... I was diagnosed with PCOS in 1973 with 1 3/4's of my ovaries removed at that time. I was 19. Less than 2 years later, I had a complete hysterectomy at 21, because I had grown a huge tumor on my remaining piece of ovary. I had Dr's continually tell me that since I had no ovaries, I could no longer be having the symptoms of PCOS. WRONG! Whatever this disease is about, the resulting impact on the ovaries is only one of the results. I went on Estrogen Replacement Therapy and found that my testatorone levels were still extremely high. The symptoms of PCOS never went away and in fact, over the years, my insulin resistance has gotten much worse. So..No..it does go away with removal of your ovaries..at least it has not for me. I no longer view PCOS as an infertility condition, but instead view it as a larger medical issue involving my whole endocrine system.
