Hello there, As you may already know-I suffer from lupus and PCOS.

I have had my fair share of problems. Let me assure you though, that PCOS is not caused by pregnancy. Many women have discovered their pcos symptoms after pregnancy and or miscarriages. That is when I became symptomatic...after my last miscarriage in 1996.I had alot of exterior symptoms in early adulthood that were dismissed as "normal"...the acne, hair loss, and I was always very thin, but had to eat one meal a day to maintain that weight. The damage it must have done to my body all those years of almost starving myself to be a normal weight.I just thought this was my metabolism, and that I had to watch what I ate....mostly carbs,salads...very healthy eating, but not Balanced eating.I never ate meat.

Well,I don't want to ramble as I always do,as lupus gets me down alot and I also thought that PCOS was part of lupus when I was first diagnosed in November of 2001.Please trust me...it isn't,and we are basically born with the gene that predisposes us to it. I now look at my mother's side...gosh...the PCOS of PCOS...all undiagnosed...my mom having hypogelcemic attacks all her life..heart problems on that side of the family as well as diabetes. It goes back three generations ...probably further than that.

I have also participated in trials for my illness.Seems some scientific evidence does exhist out there that alot of autoimmune defficienty diseases are somehow linked to PCOS.Lupus being one of them.Ebsteen Bar virus is shown to have been present in many with PCOs as well as Lupus. This virus, lies dormant in the system for years...depression can also follow it....something triggers it..and we are more prone to autoimmune diseases. In my lupus support group,I have noticed that most women have had mono.I had mono three times, despite a specialist with infectious disease told me that you can only get mono once...but you will test positve for the virus at certain times. This I am uncertain of.Times I tested positive..were the times I know that I had full blown mono.Glandular fever...exhaustion and irregular menses, the list is endless.

Now with the prednisone(Deltasone) Deltasone may cause euphoria, insomnia, mood changes, personality changes, psychotic behavior, or severe depression. It may worsen any existing emotional instability. It may just worsen or bring on the symptoms of Insulin Resistance.

At a high dose, Deltasone may cause fluid retention and high blood pressure. If this happens, you may need a low-salt diet and a potassium supplement.-With our lupus....there are other options.

With prolonged Deltasone treatment, eye problems may develop (e.g. a viral or fungal eye infection, cataracts, or glaucoma).

If you take Deltasone over the long term, the buildup of adrenal hormones in your body may cause a condition called Cushing's syndrome, marked by weight gain, a "moon-faced" appearance, thin, fragile skin, muscle weakness, brittle bones, and purplish stripe marks on the skin.I believe alot with PCOS have strai....the stripe-stretch marks. Women are more vulnerable to this problem than men, same goes with lupus. Alternate-day therapy may help prevent its development-I would not dismiss that prednisone(Deltasone) could have done some permanent damage to your endocrine system. In all likelyhood, you had it all your life, but the syndrome may have been well hidden,as not all women with PCOs have acne, weight gain, hairloss etc. There just seems to be a time in one's life when the symptoms of PCOS becomes evident.

PCOS is something that is also relatively new to alot of doctors.I don't know about you,but I have several specialists...one for every area that bothers me. I see a cardiologist that doesn't know what PCOS is.He sure does now.He was harping on me to lose about ten pounds...bring down my cholesterol more and exercise more.....the rhematologist said the opposite.Conflicting info is mind boggling.

With the insidious course of lupus and ironically...that prednisone can cause lupus...that is another story.

If you would like to chat..please don't hesitate to email me. I am certainly not that knowledgeable about PCOS YET,but I can certainly give you some advice about lupus. It's a great mimic alright, and it can get very frustrating to say the least...but is no longer a death sentence. PCOS on top of that..just makes things worse,,,with the high protein diets that are contradicted in our cases. Please don't hesitate to email me at:barbaracamara@yahoo.com if you ever feel the need to vent or talk.I had been extremely ill with my lupus in 1999...things were very bad...I am by no means a well person, but I have come a long way with using some alternative approaches,as the prednisone certainly took a toll on me. Maybe we can offer some advice to each other.I don't know of another lupus sufferer with PCOS/and I am always searching for someone that can relate to me.

Best wishes and a virtual hug!

What type of tests did you have performed to state that you have polycyctic ovaries?Alot of women have PCOS,but not all have the cysts. I can tell you that lupus can cause anovulation...it can mimic just about everything. There is not one part of the body that it won't try to attack. Usually, targeting the weakest organs first. But in all probability it is the PCOS.Have you been diagnosed as Insulin Resistant or Insulin Sensitive?

I hope this helps you out some.

Before I got pregnant I had mostly normal cycles >(7-8)/year, but since then nothing. Could the prednisone have done
