The problem with taking Glucophage while breastfeeding an infant is due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Glucophage does go through the breast milk to the infant.

While you can take progestin only pills and breast feed, I am not aware of any studies that indicate how these pill effect our hormonal level (women with PCOS). If the progestins are not high enough, it can cause us to develop multiple cysts, endangering future pregnancies.

Only a few years ago, breast feeding moms were asked to us a combination of spermicides and condoms for the prevention of pregnancy. This combination works quite well for this purpose. After breast feeding, you can go back on a pill that works better for women with PCOS without as much worry.
