Re: Glucophage & Levoxyl & other meds- ADVICE NEEDEDFrom: Sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 21 Mar 2002 05:30:46 -0600 (CST)
Hi Valerie, will see what I can do. I take my thyroid hormone about 1/2 hr before breakfast then I take the met and some other drugs at the end of breakfast. As far as I can see metformin shouldn't affect the thryoxine and anyway, I am still having my dose monitored and adjusted to make sure. According to my research the key drugs that can affect are things like antacids - I looked up the list of drug interactions on the levothyroxine website and met wasn't there - as met is a common drug I assume that it not being there means no interaction. Anyway, my recommendation would be to have your TSH checked after a month or so of taking met, so that your dose could be adjusted, if necessary. Can't help you with the Atkins - have never tried it. Good Luck. I use a more moderate approach, but have fallen badly off my diet recently and am trying to get back on. I think alcohol 'IN MODERATION' is allowable on met, so long as you don't have kidney or liver problems. I try to enjoy one standard drink a day! Will be having liver and kidney screening as part of my annual physical in the next month or so...... will find out then, I guess. Best wishes
-- Sally
