several questionsFrom: Dave (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 17 Mar 2002 21:03:28 -0500
I was recently diagnosed with PCOS following an initial visit with a new ob-gyn (actually a women's health nurse practitioner). As I have been educating myself, I've realized I've had symptoms since my teens (I'm now 34). I was even diagnosed with insulin resistance two years ago and have tried to limit carbs since then. I am now on Glucophage, 500 mg three times a day, and am trying to deal with the GI side effects. A lot of the articles I read as well as the postings on here talk about the use of BCPs. I have a family history significant for pulmonary emboli and have not used BCPs since my sister's episode 6 years ago. My ob-gyn has talked about prescribing them for me, but I'm really hesitant to try any due to the increased risk of blood clots. I've had several blood work-ups for different factors associated with clotting disorders and everything has been normal, but am still really unsure. Does anyone know about increased risk for blood clots with PCOS? I also see through my reading that many of you are being followed by endocrinologists. In your experiences, is there a type of doctor that seems to best for treating PCOS or is it just important to find someone you trust?
