Re: Generic MetforminFrom: Genny (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 17 Mar 2002 10:30:10 -0600
I pray that our country never places regulations on the price of our medications. Anyone who has studied economics can tell you that price caps cause scarcity. Our federal government is a prime example of the law of unintended consequences. Canada has cheaper drugs because Canadians are compelled to pay taxes to subsidize the cost of medication. Also, Canada has an exclusive contract with drug companies which forces the makers to sell their medications at or below cost. That is one reason why Americans get stuck with a high price tag. There is no free lunch in this world. Mexico, on the other hand, has a free market in drugs. There is little to no regulation there. You can buy Glucophage over the counter without a prescription. By the way, if you are caught bringing medications back from Mexico without a prescription, you can be prosecuted in the US as a drug smuggler. Anyone remember the woman who died in an American prison of an asthma attack? She was being held on a charge of smuggling asthma medication. Of course, she died because they took away the medication she brought in from Mexico. Genny
