IN DEPTH Bladder Infection Facts (hope they help you)From: Valerie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 16 Mar 2002 16:27:32 -0600 (CST)
OK...I'm going to step up to the plate and offer the fruits of years of experience on this matter...I AM THE UTI QUEEN, not that I want this crown :)It's amazing what lousy genetics can do... and to make it quick I'll just say I get them alot because of an exceedingly rare internal defect that I was born with... After over 500 UTI's I think I can help... SOMEONE QUESTIONED WHETHER RUPTURED CYSTS INFECT THE BLADDER... NO THEY DO NOT... your reproductive (and my not so rePRODUCTIVE) system have nothing to do with your bladder in that kind of direct sense... Your hormones being out of whack can add to your predisposition to having bladder and other health problems... may also make you sweat more down there which is not good for you. First, blood in the urine is really not a UTI thing, it's a serious issue, GET IT CHECKED... Second, though the "wipe from front to back" is sound advice, there is advice that goes much further, and here goes... one reason women get 25 times more UTI experience than men is because our urethra is short. Both males and females have urethras, it's just that no one talks about ours... the urethra is the tube that transports to the outside of your body (yes, to put it simply, it's your pee-hole)... I hate to be graphic girls, but lets face it, we are built funny and we definately got the shorter end of the stick in G-d's anatomy lab! When we are sexually active, lets face it, the most bacteria rich area of our partner is rubbing right up there, and our urethra is only 2 inches long, so when we cuddle up right after and go to sleep then the bacteria has plenty of time to ascend the urethra and jump into the bladder and OWIE! {figured I'd explain how sex is a UTI vulnerability because many of us challenged PCO gals are TTC and so I would assume we're all "pretty active"} Whereas, lucky men have a 6-10 inch mong urethra (generally 1.3 inches longer than their full size tool) and any bacteria they are exposed to usually does not have the time to ascend the length of the urethra because at some point when the bacteria is journeying upward the fellow trots into the bathroom and urinates thus washing away the bacteria... so in short, PEE RIGHT AFTER SEX, it dramatically lessens your chances of bladder infections. The one no one likes to hear... NO NYLON PANTIES!!! All cotton, all the time... if you want to strut those nice shiny ones for a partner, put them on only a short while before they are destined to be taken off!!! I had a great (hilarious) female doctor as a teenager, and she used to say "the key to successful vulva ownership is respecting that shee needs to breathe just as much as you do" I've always chuckled at that line... :) Also, ladies... this sucks and I know it... WE AREN'T SUPPOSED TO TAKE BUBBLE BATHS, technically, neither should young girls either... but the fully developed vulva is not meant to be soaked in soaps... it damages the chemicals our body secretes to aid in infection prevention, and it is not healthy for the fragile tissues of the vulva... just like douching is negative for our bodies in most cases, so is the old favorite bubble bath... SORRY For FREQUENT UTI SUFFERERS, there is one other rarely evoked option... many women, after giving birth, are told to fill up a bottle with warm water and rinse themselves after urtination and then just quickly pat dry...this is very effective for maintaining a low level of possibility for cross contamination AND for cleansing away what you don't want to leave behind anyway... so grab a little bottle with a screw on cap like the mustard container and carry it in your purse...fill it up with warm water on the way into the stall and you are ready to go (didn't mean it as a pun, but hell...this subject is one that could use some humor!) SO SORRY THIS WAS SO LONG, BUT I THOUGHT THIS WAS A GALS ISSUE THAT WARRANTED THIS KIND OF DEPTH...AND MY PERSONAL PEEVE IS WHEN PEOPLE TELL ME NOT TO DO SOMETHING BECAUSE ITS BAD FOR ME AND THEN THEY OMIT THE REASONS WHY...
