Re: Belle, Lori, Tera and the March's issue of Woman's day has saved my life...longFrom: tera (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 15 Mar 2002 13:53:46 -0600 (CST)
Hi! I am soooo proud of you! You knew something was wrong and did not quit until you got the tests you needed. I hope that many ladies will read your post and find a doctor who will listen to them, do the tests that are needed and start treatment! I agree with you -- it sounds weird but I was SO RELIEVED to finally get my PCOS diagnosis. I did not know as much about it then that I do now but it was "neat" to finally put a name to all of my crazy symptoms! Now what? You will probably want to treat the *source* of your PCOS and your *symptoms*. Well, first you should do something for your insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is thought to be the underlying cause of PCOS. Many women with PCOS are taking Glucophage or Metformin to help with this. It is important to do something for insulin resistance (IR) because we are at greater risk for type 2 diabetes and other "fun" things. Glucophage and Metformin have done wonders for many women with PCOS. It has helped to regulate periods, helped with weight gain (combined with a low carb diet) as well as other symptoms. Side effects are mostly gastric (nausea, loose stools) and the "secret" is to start slow and work up to your prescribed dose to avoid side effects (and not everyone gets them). For PCOS symptoms -- Some women take a birth control pill to help regulate periods if theirs is irregular. Not all birth control pills are alike. Check out this forum for info on pills. Some pills don't work as well as others as far as PCOS is concerned. Many have good experiences with Yasmin and others like it. For excess facial and body hair and head hair loss many women take Spironolactone or Aldactone or other anti-androgens. I've heard that this may not rid you of hair you already have but will help with the development of additional hair. Also, a few women here have had EXCELLENT results with a new cream call Vaniqa for facial hair. A herbal supplement to try would be saw palmetto which is thought to have anti-androgenic properties. A diet low in carbohydrates will help your insulin resistance and will help keep your weight down and will help treat the source of your PCOS. Carbs are sugars, pasta and rice, bread, etc. Check out diets such as Sugar Busters, Atkins or the Suzanne Somers diet (Somersizing). There are books on all of these in the bookstores and they help I'm currently doing Atkins. Sorry so long, but I wanted to give you as much info as I could. You sound like you're on the right track, congrats! I'll let Belle weigh in on your test results. Take care! Feel free to e-mail me personally at anytime! God bless! Tera jasonandtera@att.net
